The paper presents the problem of collisions of wild animals with oncoming trains. It explains the reasons for the presence of animals on tracks and describes potential threats to the environment and railroad traffic safety. In order to reduce the chance of an accident involving animals, different solutions are used: structural (that prevents animals from entering the tracks) and stimulus (that warns of an approaching train), as well as supporting methods that can increase the effectiveness of other means. The analysis of the results of studies carried out in various ecosystems around the world allowed to assess the effectiveness of the most popular methods of protecting fauna from collisions with vehicles and innovative solutions, considering the psychology of animals. Their application will allow to reach a compromise between development of transport networks, traffic safety and reduction of environmental impact.
